Eastern Lowland Gorillas are the largest among the four subspecies of Gorillas. They distinguish themselves unique by their large hands, short muzzle, and brownish color along with stocky body.
By size, these animals weigh up to 250kg and reach two meters high. They are herbivorous in nature and widely feed on fruits, tree leaves, young bamboo shoot, stem as well as some insects such as termites, ants and more.
In 2016, research made by scientists indicated a shocking drop in the numbers of these species by seventy seven percent.
The numbers estimated to 17000 in 1995 dropped to 3800 in 2016. The main reason for this decrease is the civil unrest in DR Congo.
Of the total numbers recorded in the past, still 13% of these Gorilla subspecies remain housed in Kahuzi Biega National Park.
After the political unrests, these Gorillas have been constantly affected by poaching, mining, habitat loss due to illegal settlements and more.
Due to conservation efforts made, Kahuzi Biega National Park is now well protected and these Gorillas are enjoying their natural homes without difficult.
Kahuzi Beiga National Park welcomes tourists for trekking experiences and two habituated Gorilla families of Eastern Lowland Gorillas are available for adventurers.
